Lake Traunsee in Upper Austria’s Salzkammergut region is a popular hub for water sports such as sailing, surfing or scuba diving.
Lake Traunsee is 191 metres deep, making it one of the deepest lakes in Austria. The Romans called it “Lacus Felix” – the happy lake. Its clear water, picturesque location and almost perfect wind conditions certainly trigger feelings of contentment among water sports enthusiasts.
Those who enjoy sailing, kitesurfing, diving, water skiing, kayaking, wakeboarding and stand-up paddling can find introductory programmes and courses at the “Wassersportarena Traunsee”, an organisation of water sports providers at the Traunsee.
Something special: “The Riverwave”. This is the name of a river wave specially created for surfing. It is located a few kilometres from Lake Traunsee directly on the Traun river. The ingenious system, which uses the height difference in the riverbed and the energy of the river, helps to create the surfable wave.
