The Waters of the East Tyrol

Tranquil lakes, bubbling rivers and mighty waterfalls delight hikers in Austria’s East Tyrol province.

Those who want to marvel at water in its different forms will find impressive places in the East Tyrol.

One of the attractions is the Umball Falls in the Virgental at the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park. The Isel, the last free-flowing glacier river in the Alps, plunges over several steps into the valley.

The marked path winds through the impressive gorge and past the falls in seven stages. There are information boards telling visitors about the importance of the river Isel and viewing platforms that project into the gorge. The journey from Hinterbichl in the Virgental to the Umball Falls and back takes around four hours with a climb up and down of 445 metres in altitude.

The Wassererlebnisweg (“water adventure trail”) in St. Jakob in Defereggental encourages exciting discoveries.

This family-friendly hike leads along the Schwarzach, the lifeline of the Defereggental, past wetlands, waterfalls, springs and streams. Information boards explain the varied effects of the water.

In summer 2019, the new adventure playground “Water Myth Ochsenlacke” will open at the Moseralm above St. Jakob. Visitors will meet the guardians of the mountain water treasures such as the brown trout Salmo and the frog Anura.

Five large pieces play equipment are available for climbing, jumping, balancing, sliding and seesawing. A viewing platform is located on the ridge to the Leppleskofel.
