The Salzkammergut Bike Route connects thirteen lakes in three of Austria’s provinces.
The entire route is just under 340 kilometres in length and, for cyclists who are also interested in culture, there is hardly a more beautiful tour. The trail through the Salzkammergut takes in the lake landscape in Salzburg, Upper Austria and Styria.
It is worth making a stop in almost every town that is passed along the way. In the festival and Mozart city of Salzburg, for example.
Or on Lake Wolfgang, in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hallstatt or in the imperial city of Bad Ischl. Other possibilities are the village of Mondsee with its twin-towered church, Gmunden on Lake Traunsee with Orth Castle.
In the Ausseerland the thermal baths in Bad Aussee and in Bad Mitterndorf are ideal for a relaxing break.
You can start your cycling tour through the Salzkammergut at any place along the route. The route is mainly on asphalt and takes around a week for the entire length.
Depending on the variant chosen, cyclists should expect to between 2,000 and 4,000 metres of altitude difference. The route can be shortened by using bus, train or boat for some sections.
